Bryce Baringer’s incredible journey from walk-on to All-American and NFL draft pick is not limited to football. The former Michigan State punter has now achieved another athletic feat in the sport of golf.
After an impressive rookie season with the New England Patriots, Baringer showcased his golf skills by shooting a remarkable 1-under-par 69 in a Massachusetts Amateur qualifier held at Stockbridge Golf Club. This outstanding performance secured Baringer a coveted spot in the upcoming Massachusetts Amateur Championship scheduled for July.
Reflecting on his achievement, Baringer shared his previous unsuccessful attempts at qualifying for such tournaments while living in Michigan. However, determined to give it another shot, he discovered the Massachusetts Amateur Championship, conveniently located in Framingham, and coinciding with his break from football. Recognizing the opportunity to stay competitive, Baringer received wholehearted support from those around him, making the experience even more special.
Baringer’s ability to excel in multiple sports and defy the odds is a testament to his talent and unwavering dedication. As he continues to make waves in the sports world, his story serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes everywhere.
Baringer, a graduate of Pontiac Notre Dame Prep, had an incredibly unlikely journey in college. He initially joined the University of Illinois as a walk-on but didn’t see any playing time. He then transferred to Michigan State and, almost by chance, secured a spot on the team. However, he lost his place for a year before making a remarkable comeback, ultimately becoming arguably the top player in his position nationwide. He earned the title of Big Ten Punter of the Year and set records with the Spartans.
Following his selection by the New England Patriots in the sixth round of last year’s draft, Baringer proved himself and became the team’s starting punter. He averaged an impressive 46.9 yards per punt, with a long of 79 yards and 38 punts downed inside the opposing team’s 20-yard line.
Aside from his prowess in football, Baringer also possesses exceptional golfing skills. In 2022, he made a trip to Augusta National to support his former roommate, James Piot, who was competing in The Masters as a golfer representing Michigan State University.
Baringer’s primary focus is football in his professional life. However, since it is currently the offseason, he has a unique opportunity to participate in the Massachusetts Amateur Championship from July 8th to 12th. This gives him a week to prepare before he returns to the field for training camp with the Patriots.
